CitySprint grows same-day service through more acquisitions

CitySprint, the country’s leading same-day delivery company which has pursued a policy of growth over the past several years, announced its most recent acquisition on 25 June. As of 1 July, CitySprint are to operate courier services previously provided by Scarlet Couriers in Bracknell and Slough expanding their same-day delivery services in Berkshire.

Scarlet Couriers have built a solid reputation within the business-rich Thames Valley area for the past 25 years. They were founder members of APC Overnight which is now one of the UK’s largest overnight-delivery networks and were recently cited as one of Britain’s top private companies by the Sunday Times Profit Track 100 listings. Scarlet’s fleet of more than 75 vehicles operate from Reading, Wycombe and Uxbridge, as well as Bracknell and Slough.

CitySprint’s fleet includes over 2000 couriers

CitySprint now have a fleet of over 2000 couriers, using pedal cycles, motorcycles and Smart cars in addition to small and large vans. They operate from 35 service centres throughout England, Scotland and Wales.

CitySprint’s same-day delivery services have continued to expand and build on their existing network since 2008 when they identified the Midlands as an area for potential growth. This led to the acquisition of PBS Couriers in Birmingham, swiftly followed by Jaguar Couriers of Telford, and in 2010 they added On The Dot Couriers, a Warwickshire-based firm. Later in 2010, CitySprint turned their attention to the Gloucester and Wiltshire area, taking on the operations of Road Runners in Swindon. The acquisition of Lewis Day same-day delivery and car fleets in late 2011 extended this intense phase of expansion and gave access to a further 17 operational bases across the UK.

This strategy of continued expansion has enabled CitySprint to boast annual growth figures of over 10% for the past seven years, with in the region of 3 million same-day deliveries being achieved each year.

‘The only noticeable changes will be beneficial ones’

Patrick Gallagher, Chief Executive at CitySprint, cites the acquisition of businesses that share their cultural values and a commitment to outstanding customer service as the reason for this rapid growth and success. He has also described the move to acquire Scarlet as a significant milestone in their ongoing growth strategy, saying that CitySprint’s extensive national reach is the key to their continued success.

Scarlet’s existing customers are being reassured that same-day delivery services will continue to be provided by the same staff from the same office, with business very much as usual – the only noticeable changes will be beneficial ones. CitySprint’s expanded scale and national reach will provide Scarlet’s customers with an enhanced same-day delivery service. The combination of local on-the-ground presence, aiding later collection times and early deliveries, coupled with a national network, appears to be providing high levels of customer satisfaction as CitySprint continue to go from strength to strength in this highly competitive market.
