Chile is a South American country which borders Peru, Argentina and Bolivia. It is seen as one of the more prosperous and stable nations in South America and, in 2010, became the first country in the continent to join the OECD (Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development), alongside being a founder member of the United Nations and the Union of South American Nations. On the business front, the Global Competitiveness Report for 2009/10 named Chile as the thirtieth most competitive country in the world, the first in South America, well ahead of the likes of Brazil, Mexico and Argentina. The economy is driven in large part by a copper mining industry, which produces as much as a third of the world's copper output, with the manufacture of goods such as food, rubber goods and machinery also contributing.
